Das–Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System¶
An individually administered, norm-referenced cognitive battery that operationalizes PASS theory as separate Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive process scales and interprets their profile alongside an overall score.
Core Idea¶
The Das–Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) is an individually administered, standardized, norm-referenced battery designed to measure four cognitive processes from PASS theory: Planning, Attention, Simultaneous processing, and Successive processing. Instead of organizing intelligence primarily as verbal versus performance ability or as a hierarchy of broad abilities, it operationalizes a particular neurocognitive information-processing theory through multiple subtests and composite scores.
The locked identity is qualified examiner + standardized PASS-linked subtests + examinee performance under controlled administration + age-referenced scoring -> Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, Successive, and overall score profile -> cautious interpretation for cognitive strengths, weaknesses, and assessment questions. The original CAS, published in 1997, targeted children and adolescents; CAS2 is a revised, renormed instrument with core, extended, and brief forms.
Scope of Application¶
CAS is used in school psychology, cognitive assessment, learning-disability evaluation, attention and executive-function questions, research on PASS processes, and planning of further assessment. Its profile can generate hypotheses: for example, whether difficulty appears more strongly in sequential processing than in simultaneous integration. Such a profile is most defensible when differences are statistically reliable, uncommon in the normative population, consistent with behavior and history, and relevant to the referral question.
Clarity¶
The four labels refer to intended constructs, not task-pure substances. A Planning subtest can also require attention, speed, motor output, and understanding instructions. A Successive task can recruit working memory and language. Construct validity asks whether score variation is sufficiently attributable to the named PASS process rather than these correlated demands.
Manages Complexity¶
Cognitive difficulty is heterogeneous. An overall score compresses performance but can hide different pathways to the same total. CAS preserves four process coordinates so evaluators can ask more specific questions and connect them to tasks and interventions. Standardization makes administrations comparable; norms turn raw results into interpretable reference positions.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- If an examinee’s conditions fall outside the norm sample, the normative percentile may not carry its intended warrant. 2. If two scale scores differ by less than the uncertainty of their difference, rank-order language should not become a substantive profile claim. 3. A low subtest score can reflect process weakness, misunderstanding, fatigue, motor demand, language, or disengagement; triangulation is required. 4. A reliable total score does not validate every interpretation of the four composites.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Exact transfer occurs across CAS administrations and approved versions when standardized PASS-linked tasks, norms, four composites, and qualified interpretation remain literal. Edition and language adaptations must be recorded.
Other intelligence and cognitive batteries share Measurement, Norm-Referenced Assessment, and Construct Validity but use different constructs and task architectures. Informal executive-function observation shares topics but not standardized warrants. The candidate remains domain-specific because PASS constructs, proprietary subtests, norms, and interpretive rules are indispensable.
