Degree of frost¶
A historical nonstandard temperature expression giving how many Celsius or Fahrenheit degrees the air lies below water’s freezing point.
Core Idea¶
The scale is ambiguous unless Celsius or Fahrenheit is named, and zero degrees of frost means the relevant freezing point rather than absolute zero. A reference temperature of zero Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit is selected and the observed temperature is subtracted from it, reversing direction so larger frost degrees mean colder air.
