Density Current¶
A fluid or fluidized mixture propagates through or beneath an ambient medium because a density contrast converts gravitational potential into a directed intrusion with a moving front and a stratified interface.
Core Idea¶
A density current is a fluid or fluidized mixture that propagates through or beneath an ambient medium because gravity acts on a density contrast. The current forms a moving front and an interface or mixing layer, while entrainment, friction, and buoyancy determine speed and runout. Two media or mixtures have a density difference; gravity supplies the driving potential; a coherent intrusion advances relative to an ambient medium; and a stratified interface mediates mixing. Equalizing density removes the defining drive even if forced flow remains.
Scope of Application¶
Oceanic, atmospheric, volcanic, reservoir, and laboratory cases vary in material but all remain instances of fluid mechanics under gravity. Removing fluid, density, and gravity leaves generic gradient-driven flow, already represented elsewhere.
Clarity¶
Flow is the broader transport genus. Convection usually organizes buoyant circulation with rising and sinking limbs. Stratification is the layered state that permits or constrains the current. Turbidity currents, salt wedges, cold fronts, and pyroclastic density currents are specializations.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction turns a scattered family of cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.
