Dictator Game¶
An experimental protocol where one participant unilaterally splits an endowment with a powerless recipient — by stripping away every strategic lever, it forces any positive transfer onto the non-strategic ledger, so its lattice of single-bit variants decomposes the sources of pro-social behaviour.
Core Idea¶
The dictator game is a minimal experimental protocol in which one participant, the dictator, receives a fixed endowment and decides unilaterally how much to transfer to a powerless recipient who cannot accept, reject, or retaliate. Self-interested rationality predicts a transfer of zero; empirically, dictators give 20–30% on average, with a modal 50% split. Because all strategic structure is removed, any positive transfer must be attributed to non-strategic motives, and its variants isolate each one.

Naming the dictator game makes legible a distinction richer games entangle: strategic motives for giving (fear of punishment, anticipated reciprocity, reputation) versus non-strategic ones (altruism, inequity aversion, fairness norms, being observed). Removing every strategic lever forces any transfer onto the non-strategic ledger, which is what lets a researcher read the ultimatum game correctly. The recipient's powerlessness is not a limitation but the instrument's calibration, and the sharper question becomes which component of pro-sociality produced this transfer.
Manages Complexity¶
Observed giving is a snarl of co-acting causes, confounded in richer games. The dictator game tames it not by modeling the mixture but by supplying a baseline that zeroes out an entire class of strategic terms, so whatever remains is the non-strategic residue. The compression compounds because the paradigm is a lattice of single-bit contrasts — versus ultimatum (punishment), versus trust (reciprocity), versus double-blind (audience) — each isolating one additive component, reducing "what generates generosity?" to a few pairwise differences.

The other-regard it reveals travels onward under fairness, altruism, reciprocity, and cooperation, not as "the dictator game."
