Distraction¶
The involuntary capture of an agent's scarce attention by a salient secondary stimulus that wins a bottleneck competition against the primary task by its own salience rather than the agent's intent, imposing a performance cost plus recovery time.
Core Idea¶
Distraction is the involuntary capture of an agent's scarce attentional capacity by a stimulus that competes with and temporarily displaces the current task. The structure is a triple: an agent with limited attention on a primary task, a secondary stimulus salient enough (intensity, novelty, motivational pull) to compete, and a reallocation in which the secondary wins by its own salience rather than the agent's intent. The defining cost is the primary task's decrement plus the recovery time to re-engage.
Scope of Application¶
Distraction lives across the subfields of attention and human-factors research — a goal-directed agent whose selective attention can be captured against its intent. The bare "bottleneck reallocated to a louder signal" recurs in CPUs and networks but under the scheduling primes.

Clarity¶
Naming distraction makes legible who is doing the selecting — agent or stimulus — relocating "distractibility" from a trait to the predictable product of a high-salience secondary beside a high-cost primary in a capacity-limited channel. It poses the capture-versus-yield question and separates three fused things: the interruption (arrival), the capture (reallocation), and the cost (decrement plus re-engagement).
Manages Complexity¶
Off-task performance losses are heterogeneous — a buzzing phone, a radio call, an open-plan office. Distraction collapses that sprawl onto one triple of parameters (secondary salience, primary engagement depth, capture cost), from which the outcome reads off directly. A capture-versus-yield fork routes the whole analysis, and the intervention space reduces to three pre-named levers: lower salience, deepen engagement, insulate the channel.
