Distributive Case

A distributive case or case-like form marks a noun as the unit over whose members, groups, places, or intervals a quantity, comparison, or event applies separately—'per N,' 'N by N,' or 'every N.'

Core Idea

A distributive case is a morphological case or case-like nominal form whose central job is to establish a distributive unit: the entity, group, place, category, or interval with respect to which a quantity, comparison, or event is applied separately. Its most characteristic translations are “per N,” “by N,” “N by N,” and “every N.” Hungarian kutyánként “per dog,” házanként “per house,” and péntekenként “every Friday” illustrate the function. Finnish maittain and Estonian riigiti support “by country” readings in which values or practices are compared separately across countries.[1][2]

The defining move is not merely plurality. The marked nominal chooses the distributive key or granularity at which the surrounding predicate is evaluated. If a tax is 5,000 forints per dog, dogs supply the counting units and each relevant dog contributes one charge. If results are reported by country, countries supply comparison cells; the result may differ from one cell to another. If an event occurs every Friday, Fridays supply recurring temporal intervals.

The word case must be used with discipline. Case inventories are language-particular, and there is no cross-linguistically uniform test that makes every distributive suffix a canonical inflectional case. A recent comprehensive Hungarian grammar treats -(V)nként under productively suffixed adverbs, outside its inventory of seventeen true case suffixes.[1] Finnish -(i)ttain/-(i)ttäin and Estonian -ti have traditionally been treated as denominal adverb formatives, although corpus and acceptability evidence shows noun-like and case-like behavior. Ylikoski consequently calls them “dwarf cases”: real categories at the inflection–derivation boundary, not unqualified members of the conventional paradigm.[3][2] The encyclopedia node retains Distributive Case as the recognized comparative label while making this category gradient constitutive rather than hiding it.

Structural Signature

The recurring structure contains these roles:

  1. A nominal base: a noun, noun phrase, classifier, measure, place, group, or time expression supplies the potential units.
  2. A distributive exponent: a language-specific suffix or comparable morphological formative marks the base; examples include Hungarian -(V)nként, Finnish -(i)ttain/-(i)ttäin, and Estonian -ti.
  3. A distributive key: the denotation of the marked expression fixes the cells or units over which distribution occurs.
  4. A distributed relation: a quantity, cost, comparison, assignment, property, or event is related separately to those units.
  5. A granularity rule: lexical number, classifiers, numerals, grouping expressions, and constructional context determine whether the units are individuals, pairs, teams, countries, liters, days, or larger intervals.
  6. A syntactic host relation: the marked form usually functions adverbially with respect to a predicate, even where its internal syntax remains noun-like.
  7. Language-specific productivity: the grammar restricts which stems, modifiers, and meanings are licensed; a semantically plausible coinage need not be grammatical.
  8. A category-status analysis: evidence from paradigms, agreement, modifier licensing, productivity, and syntactic distribution determines whether the form is classified as case inflection, derivation, or an intermediate case-like category in that language.

A schematic semantic representation is:

where the marked nominal and context construct a relevant set of units \(U_C\), and the surrounding relation \(R\) is evaluated with respect to each unit. This is a recognition aid, not a claim that every distributive construction is a simple universal quantifier. Context can restrict the relevant set; lexicalized forms may acquire non-universal meanings; and “by category” can organize comparison rather than assert an identical event for every member.

The invariant is: the morphological form makes the noun's denotation control the unit-by-unit organization of the predicate.

What It Is Not

Distributive case is not plural number. Plural morphology indicates more than one referent, but it does not force the predicate to apply separately. “The children lifted a table” permits collective action; a distributive form can instead make each child or each group a separate assignment unit.

It is not a free distributive quantifier such as English each or every. Those words can express a related semantic operation without a case-like exponent on the unit noun. The node concerns grammaticalized nominal morphology, not distributivity in all syntax and semantics.

It is not a distributive numeral. Distributive numerals answer questions such as “how many apiece?” and may be formed by reduplication, affixation, or separate words. WALS deliberately distinguishes their formal strategies and the possible distributive keys.[4] A distributive case form more typically marks the denominator or comparison unit—“per dog,” “by country”—although numerals and classifiers can occur inside that phrase.

It is not the partitive case. Partitive marking presents an indefinite portion, partial affectedness, or related language-specific functions. Distributive marking relates the surrounding event or quantity separately to units. Taking part of one whole and applying something per unit are different relations.

It is not automatically the distributive-temporal or iterative form. Hungarian -(V)nta/-(V)nte is restricted to temporal units and expresses regular repetition, while -(V)nként also combines with ordinary nouns, classifiers, measures, groups, and days. The two overlap in forms meaning daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly but have different distributions.[1]

Finally, it is not proof that a suffix belongs to a canonical case paradigm. A grammar, treebank, or theory may analyze the same productive meaning as case, case-like morphology, or adverb derivation. Universal Dependencies Finnish, for example, does not assign Case=Dis to -ttain forms, while documenting that some descriptions recognize a distributive case.[5]

Scope of Application

The home domain is descriptive and comparative morphosyntax, especially Uralic languages. Hungarian provides the clearest productive per N / after every N system in the evidence reviewed. Finnish and Estonian provide closely related distributive forms whose internal syntax creates a documented boundary problem between denominal adverbs and nominal case inflection. The abstraction is useful to grammar writers, typologists, morphologists, semanticists, corpus annotators, and language-technology designers.

The semantic range includes at least four recurrent subtypes:

  • rate or price denominator: a quantity applies per dog, house, item, box, liter, or other measurement unit;
  • allocation unit: exercises, resources, or obligations are assigned per group or per member;
  • comparison or variation dimension: observations differ by country, region, industry, species, period, or topic area;
  • recurring time unit: an activity occurs every Friday, every second day, weekly, or at another regular interval.

Languages need not package these subtypes alike. Hungarian's distributive suffix can mark classifiers and temporal nouns, but lexical restrictions remain. Finnish distributives are strongly productive in comparison and grouping expressions, while a separate -isin temporal category handles many recurrent-time meanings. Estonian -ti spans both non-temporal and temporal functions more freely than its Finnish cognate in the evidence reviewed.[2]

The node does not assert that every expression translatable with English per, by, or each is a distributive case. Adpositions, particles, quantifiers, reduplicated numerals, compounds, and ordinary adverbs can express the same broad meaning. Morphological locus and language-internal analysis matter.

Clarity

To diagnose a proposed distributive case or form, ask:

  1. What is the morphological exponent, and to which bases can it attach?
  2. Does the marked expression remain recognizably noun-based, or is it a fixed lexical adverb?
  3. Which units does the base contribute—individuals, containers, measures, groups, places, categories, or intervals?
  4. What relation is evaluated separately with respect to those units?
  5. Does the form change a collective or undifferentiated reading into a per-unit, grouped, or comparison reading?
  6. Which modifiers, number stems, relative clauses, and coordination patterns are permitted?
  7. Is the formative productive, semi-productive, or restricted to lexicalized items?
  8. Which explicit language-internal criteria support calling it case rather than derivation or an adverbial suffix?

The last question prevents a common mistake. Semantic resemblance alone does not settle morphological category. In Hungarian, Dékány and Hegedűs give a productive account of -(V)nként but place it among adverb-forming suffixes; in Finnish and Estonian, Ylikoski shows that distributives can accept genitive modifiers and relative clauses characteristic of nominal phrases, yet also documents incomplete agreement and graded acceptability. The clearest description therefore reports both the function and the analysis rather than forcing a binary verdict.

Manages Complexity

Distributive marking compresses repeated relational structure. Instead of enumerating “for dog one, 5,000; for dog two, 5,000; for dog three, 5,000,” the grammar marks dog as the denominator once. Instead of listing a different row for every country, a by-country form declares the comparison dimension. Instead of naming every Friday, a temporal distributive specifies the interval class over which recurrence is evaluated.

This compression preserves granularity. “The children receive two exercises” leaves open whether there are two exercises total, two per child, or two per team. Hungarian csapatonként két feladatot fixes the team as the allocation cell: two exercises per group.[1] The morphology thus changes the arithmetic licensed by the sentence without needing a separate clause for each group.

For language description, the abstraction also compresses a family of forms into one testable paradigm candidate. Analysts can compare productivity, stem choice, modifier behavior, and semantic extensions across forms rather than treating every adverb as unrelated. The gain comes with a warning: the category label must not erase language-specific morphosyntactic differences.

Abstract Reasoning

Recognizing a distributive form licenses several conditional inferences.

  • Denominator inference: in a rate expression, the marked noun identifies what one unit of the stated quantity is “per.” Multiplying the rate by the number of relevant units is licensed only if the same amount applies to each unit and no contextual exception intervenes.
  • Granularity inference: replacing the base changes the cells. “Per child” and “per team” may use the same suffix but generate different counts and allocations.
  • Scope inference: the distributive expression usually interacts with numerals, negation, aspect, and other quantifiers. Whether every unit has a distinct event, a share of one event, or merely a separate comparison value requires the whole clause.
  • Temporal inference: a time-unit base often yields recurrence, but the form may mean once per interval, at least once, habitually within each interval, or simply on members of a named class depending on the language and construction.
  • Productivity inference: attested formation with one semantic class predicts possible extension to similar stems only defeasibly. Hungarian day names are productive with -(V)nként, yet individual time nouns and month names show restrictions.
  • Category inference: noun-like modification and high productivity support case-like status; failure of ordinary agreement, restriction to adverbial function, or idiosyncratic stem choice support a derivational analysis. No single criterion universally decides the category.

These inferences make distributive case an analytical tool rather than a translation list. The key reasoning question is always: what counts as one unit here, and how is the predicate distributed over those units?

Knowledge Transfer

Within linguistics, the role structure transfers across grammar writing, semantic analysis, corpus annotation, and language technology. A descriptive grammarian identifies the exponent and its distribution. A semanticist models the key and the distributed relation. A corpus annotator decides whether the token receives a case feature or an adverbial derivation analysis. A machine-translation system must preserve granularity when moving between bound morphology and free expressions such as per, each, by, or every.

The comparative method also transfers between languages without assuming identical categories. Hungarian -(V)nként, Finnish -(i)ttain, and Estonian -ti can be compared as functional distributive formatives while retaining different internal analyses. Haspelmath's discussion of case terminology supports exactly this caution: case labels are often used for different concepts, and language-particular categories must not be equated merely because analysts reuse a traditional name.[6]

Outside linguistics, the portable skeleton is per-unit quantification or grouping. That skeleton already belongs to Quantifier, Partition, allocation reasoning, and rate formation. Calling a database GROUP BY country or a billing denominator a “distributive case” would be metaphorical; the domain-specific node requires conventionalized nominal morphology.

Examples

Hungarian rate denominator. Kutyánként / házanként 5000 Ft adót kell fizetni means that 5,000 forints of tax must be paid per dog or per house. The noun supplies the denominator, -(V)nként marks it distributively, and the amount is related to each relevant unit.[1]

Hungarian classifier and group units. The same source documents forms corresponding to “100 forints per piece/item/box/liter/drop” and csapatonként két feladatot, “two exercises per group.” The suffix does not itself decide whether units are individuals, containers, measures, or groups; the base and classifier do.

Hungarian recurring intervals. Péntekenként úszni járok means “I go swimming every Friday.” Forms with week, month, and year also support recurrence, sometimes overlapping with the separate iterative suffix. Két naponként “every second day” shows that an internal numeral can set interval size.

Finnish and Estonian comparison cells. Finnish maittain or maakunnittain and Estonian riigiti or maakonniti organize comparison “by country” or “by region/county.” Corpus and questionnaire evidence shows that such forms can occur with genitive modifiers and relative clauses, behavior that is more noun-like than a typical fixed adverb.[2]

Negative: plural without distribution. “The teams received two tasks” remains ambiguous between two tasks total and two per team. Plurality does not establish the distributive key.

Negative: distributive numeral. A language-specific form meaning “three each” answers how many items are assigned per key. It is a distributive numeral, not automatically the case-like marking of a noun denominator.[4]

Negative: lexicalized extension. Hungarian helyenként can mean “in some places,” contrary to a mechanically universal “every place” parse. A lexicalized or contextually restricted meaning must be recorded rather than forced into the core schema.

Structural Tensions

Case versus derivation. A broad comparative label makes recurring structure visible; a strict paradigm analysis prevents every productive adverbial suffix from becoming a “case.” The diagnostic is language-internal evidence from paradigmatic integration, productivity, modifier behavior, agreement, and syntactic distribution.

Universal distribution versus contextual restriction. “Per N” suggests application to every relevant unit, but relevance can be contextually restricted and forms can lexicalize exceptional readings. The diagnostic is whether the sentence commits to all contextually selected units or only organizes comparison by unit type.

Individual versus grouped granularity. A marker can distribute over persons, teams, boxes, or intervals. The diagnostic is the base noun, its classifier or numeral, and the total predicted count.

Inflectional regularity versus lexical restriction. Productive morphology invites new forms, yet phonology, lexical class, register, and construction can block seemingly analogous bases. The diagnostic is attested speaker behavior, not translation plausibility.

Cross-linguistic comparison versus category identity. Similar meanings support a comparative concept, while formal differences block the claim that the languages possess one identical paradigm slot. The diagnostic is to separate functional comparability from language-particular classification.

Structural–Framed Character

Distributive Case is mixed, leaning structural. Its core roles—unit set, distributive key, morphological exponent, distributed relation, and granularity—support precise recognition and inference. The term is not merely a historical doctrine or evaluative frame.

Its classification remains strongly practice- and language-framed. What counts as a case depends on a descriptive tradition and on language-specific morphosyntactic criteria. The same Finnish form can be encoded as adverbial derivation in one annotation scheme and discussed as a dwarf case in another without a change in its observed tokens. The structural meaning survives; the categorical boundary is analyzed rather than discovered by one universal test.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

The structural core is per-unit organization: choose units from a noun's denotation and apply a quantity, event, allocation, or comparison separately with respect to them. This core explains denominator arithmetic, grouped assignment, by-category comparison, and temporal recurrence.

The domain accent is grammaticalized nominal morphology. It includes suffix allomorphy and stem selection; conventional glosses such as DISTR; case-versus-derivation diagnostics; agreement and modifier behavior; language-specific productivity; and the syntax of adverbial noun-based phrases. Remove that accent and the concept collapses into general distributive quantification, which is already covered at the prime level.

The label therefore travels literally within linguistic description, not to every nonlinguistic per-unit computation. Even within linguistics, it travels as a comparative concept whose realizations and paradigm status must be separately established.

The minimal parent is Quantifier. A distributive case or form is a grammaticalized, domain-specific way of scoping a relation over the units supplied by a nominal base. It specializes quantification by binding the unit-selection operation to morphology and by preserving language-specific rules for the distributive key.

Criteria of Individuation is related because the base and its modifiers determine what counts as one unit, but the distributive form does not establish a general ontology or persistence criterion. Partition is related when “by country” or “by category” creates comparison cells, but distributive temporal and rate-denominator uses do not require a formally exhaustive, non-overlapping partition. Allocation is a downstream use when resources or obligations are assigned per unit, not a superclass. No additional parent edge is required.
