Doing Gender¶
The interactional process through which situated conduct is made accountable to gender-category expectations and thereby reproduces, contests, or changes gender as an apparently natural social order.
Core Idea¶
Doing Gender is West and Zimmerman's ethnomethodological account of gender as a routine, situated social accomplishment rather than a property stored inside an individual and merely expressed in behavior. People act in settings where they and others can be categorized, their conduct can be interpreted against normative conceptions associated with gender categories, and their adequacy can be called to account. Through that recurrent interpretation and answerability, gender appears to observers as the natural cause of conduct even though the interaction is helping produce the very differences it treats as preexisting.
Scope of Application¶
Doing Gender belongs most directly to sociology of gender, ethnomethodology, symbolic interactionism, social psychology, and qualitative studies of interaction. It applies at the interactional level without pretending that interactions float free of institutions. Jobs, schools, households, law, architecture, markets, and organizations distribute people and resources, make categories salient, and supply expectations; situated conduct in turn presents the resulting arrangements as normal and legitimate.
The concept is useful across face-to-face and mediated situations. Co-participants may evaluate a conversational interruption in real time; supervisors may retrospectively interpret assertiveness, warmth, dress, caregiving, or technical competence; platforms and forms may make binary classification mandatory before any encounter occurs.
Clarity¶
Suppose a physician gives the same direct clinical instruction as a colleague. If coworkers treat directness as ordinary professional competence from the colleague but as unfeminine hostility from the physician they categorize as a woman, the physician's conduct is accountable to two standards at once. The act does not carry gender by itself. Gender is done through category attribution, the normative expectation, the unequal evaluation, the physician's need to anticipate or answer it, and the organization that converts the judgment into collegial access or authority.
Manages Complexity¶
Gender inequality spans attitudes, identities, bodies, organizations, laws, divisions of labor, and repeated encounters. Doing Gender compresses one otherwise puzzling link: how large-scale arrangements persist through ordinary activity without requiring every participant to consciously choose inequality. It locates a mechanism between macrostructure and individual disposition. Situations make gender categorization available; normative expectations guide interpretation; accountable responses shape conduct and opportunity; accumulated outcomes appear to confirm the expectations.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- If two actors perform the same task but only one is asked to reconcile it with gender expectations, the asymmetry is evidence of gender accountability rather than a task difference. 2. If a person conforms while explicitly rejecting the norm, conformity can still reproduce the observable standard; endorsement is not required. 3. If a person departs from a norm and is sanctioned as an exception, the departure may strengthen the rule by making its boundary visible.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Exact transfer within gender research requires remapping all the roles. In a household study, the situation is allocation of care and domestic labor; participants anticipate and account for task choices under gender expectations; explanations can naturalize a division as preference or aptitude. In workplace research, occupational tasks and promotion evaluations become the accountability sites. In conversational analysis, turn-taking, interruption, topic control, or displays of expertise are examined only when evidence shows they are categorized and evaluated as gender-relevant.
