Core Idea¶

Duality of structure holds that agency and structure are analytically distinguishable but recursively constituted: actors draw on structural rules and resources that their practices reproduce. Knowledgeable action invokes interpretive schemes, facilities and norms; repeated use stabilizes those properties as institutions, while altered practice can transform them. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
