Duration Neglect¶
The judgment bias in which the length of a bounded experience contributes negligible weight to its retrospective evaluation, which is instead built from a representative peak and the final moments (the peak-end rule) — so remembered utility systematically diverges from the integral of what was lived.
Core Idea¶
Duration neglect is the finding that when a person evaluates a bounded past experience, its length contributes negligible weight to the summary; the retrospective judgment is driven instead by a few salient moments — the peak (greatest intensity) and the end — the pattern Kahneman and Fredrickson formalized as the peak-end rule. Experienced utility (the integral of hedonic value over real duration) diverges from remembered utility (the scalar the remembering self builds and later uses to choose).

Clarity¶
Naming duration neglect pries apart two utilities that "how was it" runs together: experienced utility (the integral over real length) and remembered utility (the scalar consulted when deciding whether to repeat). The agent who lives the experience and the one who books the next are, for evaluative purposes, different — and the second holds the choice. It also separates the heuristic (peak-end weighting, what the summary records) from its failure mode (the dropped duration term).
Manages Complexity¶
A bounded experience is a high-dimensional object — a moment-by-moment hedonic trace over its full length, an integral over the whole trajectory. Duration neglect collapses that to two coordinates: the peak and the end, with elapsed time dropped. The recalled evaluation becomes a function of essentially two points, so "how will this be remembered" reduces to "where is the peak, and how does it end," and the design task collapses from "improve every minute" to "shape the peak and engineer the end."
Abstract Reasoning¶
Duration neglect licenses diagnostic inference — reading a recalled rating from peak and end, and explaining paradoxical recollections by the missing integral. It supports interventionist design (shape the peak, engineer the end; predict a gentler tail raises recall even as total discomfort rises — the colonoscopy result) and boundary-drawing that bounds claims to remembered, not experienced, utility and to remembering agents. It also enables prediction and ordering: episodes are recalled by peak intensity and ending affect rather than total duration.

Within the study of human judgment the finding transfers as mechanism: wherever a person summarizes a bounded experience to a scalar that later drives a repeat choice — cognitive psychology, health-care and service design, advertising recall — the peak-end weighting, the experienced-vs-remembered split, and the "shape the peak, engineer the end" prescription carry intact. Beyond the remembering self, the genuinely recurring shape — a scalar summary that discards a dimension of the trajectory it summarizes — belongs to the parent aggregation-distortion pattern, not to "duration neglect." A substrate that integrates correctly (a ledger, a proper controller) shows no such bias.
