Ecosystem Mismatch¶
Explain why a technically sound innovation stalls on deployment not by a flaw in the artifact but by the absence of one specific complementary asset its operating context tacitly required — leaving it complete-but-functionally-blocked.
Core Idea¶
Ecosystem mismatch is the innovation-diffusion failure mode in which an innovation works in isolation but fails on deployment because the surrounding institutions, partners, infrastructure, regulators, and complementary technologies it tacitly requires are absent or unaligned at the deployment site. The artifact is sound; one missing complement — charging infrastructure, billing-code recognition, a vaccinator workforce — is the binding constraint on value. The unit of analysis is the innovation plus its required ecosystem, not the innovation alone.
Scope of Application¶
Ecosystem mismatch applies across deployment contexts where a sound artifact stalls because one assumed complementary asset is absent.
- Hardware and physical-product launches — a device depending on apps, accessories, or carrier partnerships not yet in place.
- Health-tech adoption — tools needing EHR integration, billing-code recognition, and professional-society endorsement.
- Energy and transport transitions — EVs needing charging networks, grid capacity, and a repair workforce.
- Global health and vaccine deployment — a heat-stable vaccine blocked by an absent vaccinator workforce, not the formulation.
- Two-sided platform launches — the chicken-and-egg failure of one side to reach critical mass.
Clarity¶
The label reframes a deployment failure from a quality-of-the-innovation problem into a context-fit problem. When a sound product stalls, the default reading is "they built the wrong thing," inviting redesign; the concept makes a different diagnosis legible — they built the right thing for a context that does not yet exist, and the binding constraint is a missing complementary asset. It separates "is the innovation good?" from "is the ecosystem ready to let it deliver value?"
Manages Complexity¶
Deployment failures arrive as a heterogeneous catalogue — a supplier unready, a regulator unaligned, a billing code unrecognised, a customer routine that never formed. Ecosystem mismatch compresses them into one diagnosis: one complementary asset is the binding constraint. That collapses an open-ended search into a bounded procedure — map the tacit context-assumptions, audit the deployment site against them, find the one that fails — and fixes the question as "which assumed complement is missing here?"
