Edition (printmaking)¶
The set of impressions authorized and produced from one printmaking matrix under a declared edition policy.
Core Idea¶
Edition identity depends on the matrix, state and authorization, individual impressions remain originals within the edition, limited open artist-proof and posthumous categories require declared conventions and numbering does not alone establish authenticity. A prepared plate block screen or digital matrix yields multiple impressions; the artist or publisher fixes the edition extent and state, marks individual impressions and retires or alters the matrix according to the policy. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
