ÉLECTRE¶
A family of multicriteria decision-aiding methods that constructs credibility-qualified outranking relations between alternatives and exploits them to support choice, ranking, or sorting without forcing every criterion into full compensation.
Core Idea¶
ÉLECTRE replaces the question 'which option has the highest total score?' with the pairwise question 'is there sufficiently credible evidence that one option is at least as good as another, with no decisive opposition?' This supports noncompensatory reasoning and explicit incomparability.
The family label covers several procedures. Choosing, ranking, and sorting use different exploitation rules, so a defensible application names its variant, elicits thresholds and weights, and examines how recommendations change under plausible parameters.
Scope of Application¶
- Public policy. Compares projects under environmental, social, and economic constraints.
- Engineering design. Screens and ranks alternatives with veto-worthy failures.
- Portfolio and procurement. Supports choice where poor performance cannot always be compensated.
- Classification. Assigns alternatives to ordered categories with ÉLECTRE TRI variants.
Clarity¶
State decision problem as choice, ranking, or sorting; alternatives; criteria, directions, scales, and performance table; stakeholders; chosen ÉLECTRE variant; weights; indifference, preference, and veto thresholds; concordance and discordance formulas; credibility cut; exploitation procedure; uncertainty and missing data; sensitivity/robustness analysis; incomparability; and how the recommendation informs rather than replaces judgment. Inclusion test: Require an identified ÉLECTRE variant or justified family-level outranking model using pairwise concordance and applicable discordance/veto logic, followed by an exploitation procedure appropriate to choice, ranking, or sorting. Exclusion test: Exclude weighted-sum scoring merely branded multicriteria, pairwise comparison without outranking semantics, Pareto filtering alone, social-choice elections, and any model that treats weights as unrestricted compensation while claiming an ÉLECTRE veto. Nearest boundary: A weighted sum produces a fully compensatory scalar score; ÉLECTRE permits incomparability and can prevent strong weakness on one criterion from being offset by strengths elsewhere. Exit condition: Results change with variant, criterion direction and scales, weights, indifference/preference/veto thresholds, normalization, uncertainty, missing evaluations, credibility cut level, exploitation algorithm, robustness analysis, and stakeholder elicitation. Common misclassifications: It is not one single invariant algorithm. It is not ordinary weighted-sum scoring. An outranking relation need not be complete or transitive. Weights do not automatically represent exchange rates between criteria. Nearest named distinctions: Weighted sum model: Allows full compensation through a single additive score. PROMETHEE: Is another outranking family with different preference flows and procedures. Pareto dominance: Requires no worsening and at least one improvement, without ÉLECTRE credibility parameters. Analytic hierarchy process: Uses hierarchical pairwise judgments and ratio priorities rather than ÉLECTRE outranking.
Manages Complexity¶
Pairwise relations scale quadratically, parameters interact, and cycles or incomparabilities are expected rather than errors. Elicited thresholds and weights can dominate results unless robustness is shown.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Frame the decision problem and select the ÉLECTRE variant matching choice, ranking, or sorting.
- Construct a traceable performance table and preference directions.
- Elicit importance and threshold parameters with stakeholder interpretation.
- Compute concordance, discordance or veto, and credibility for each relevant pair.
- Apply the variant's exploitation rule and test recommendation stability across defensible parameter ranges.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Outranking logic transfers to other MCDA families when evidence for and against pairwise preference is kept explicit. ÉLECTRE-specific thresholds, kernels, distillation, or category profiles cannot be transferred without matching the chosen variant.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
ÉLECTRE sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (23rd percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
