Embeddedness¶
The economic-sociological principle that exchange and provisioning are constituted and constrained by ongoing social relations, institutions, meanings, and power rather than operating as an autonomous market sphere.
Core Idea¶
Embeddedness describes the degree and manner in which economic action is situated within and shaped by social relations and nonmarket institutions, in Polanyian institutional and Granovetterian network formulations. Relationships generate trust, information, obligation, sanctions, identity, and power that alter feasible transactions and interpretations. Market-building can disembed some rules while depending on law, state capacity, and networks that re-embed exchange. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
