Emergent evolution¶
Explain evolutionary history through the appearance of qualitatively novel levels or properties that depend on lower-level processes yet are not exhaustively characterized in the vocabulary used for those processes.
Core Idea¶
Emergent evolution is the historical emergentist doctrine that evolutionary development includes transitions at which new qualities or modes of organization appear from antecedent conditions while remaining dependent on the systems in which they arise. Lower-level constituents enter new relations and organization, the resulting whole exhibits properties not captured by simply listing those constituents in their prior roles, and retrospective scientific description connects novelty to a continuous natural history without making novelty a supernatural insertion.
Its autonomous residual is the historically specific coupling of emergent qualities to evolutionary succession and organized levels, rather than emergence generally, ordinary Darwinian descent, or any modern claim that novelty evolves.
Scope of Application¶
Emergent evolution applies when the analyst can specify a historically articulated account of evolutionary succession, organized levels, and claims of qualitative novelty associated especially with C. Lloyd Morgan and British emergentism and establish that the account makes qualitative novelty at organized evolutionary levels explanatory while retaining natural dependence on antecedent physical or biological conditions. The entry reconstructs a documented historical doctrine. It neither endorses its metaphysics nor uses it as a substitute for current evolutionary mechanisms and evidence.
Clarity¶
A clear claim names the carrier, governing rule, assumptions, and recognition test. This matters because emergent evolution is now sometimes used loosely for any surprising evolutionary development, whereas the reference-grade identity is the named emergentist doctrine and its traceable descendants. The disciplined statement is that the object counts as Emergent evolution exactly when the account makes qualitative novelty at organized evolutionary levels explanatory while retaining natural dependence on antecedent physical or biological conditions
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction compresses Morganian, Alexandrian, and Broad-style emergentism; biological, psychological, and metaphysical applications; epistemic and ontological readings of novelty into a stable carrier, rule, invariant, and failure boundary. It makes comparison tractable while retaining the variables that control validity.
Compression can hide assumptions. A responsible use therefore declares historical author, lower and higher levels, kind of novelty, causal dependence, predictability thesis, naturalism, temporal staging, explanatory vocabulary, and relation to reduction and returns to the full diagnostic whenever a convention or boundary case changes.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Type the carrier. Establish a historically articulated account of evolutionary succession, organized levels, and claims of qualitative novelty associated especially with C. Lloyd Morgan and British emergentism and reject examples from a different problem. 2. Lock the rule. Express that the account makes qualitative novelty at organized evolutionary levels explanatory while retaining natural dependence on antecedent physical or biological conditions independently of one notation or implementation.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Transfer within history and philosophy of biology is strong when new cases preserve the same carrier, mechanism, and diagnostic. The move from Morgan described consciousness and other higher-level qualities as emerging at particular stages of an evolutionary natural history. to A historian can compare Morgan's emergent evolution with Samuel Alexander's and C. D. Broad's related but nonidentical forms of British emergentism. demonstrates that continuity.

Emergent evolution sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (62nd percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
