Entry Term Alias¶
Curate a non-preferred surface form — synonym, abbreviation, colloquialism, superseded name — as a silent, non-indexing bridge that routes many-to-one to a canonical descriptor, so users arrive at one place however they name the concept.
Core Idea¶
An entry term alias is a non-preferred surface form — a synonym, abbreviation, spelling, colloquial phrase, or superseded name — curated in a controlled vocabulary not as an independent descriptor but as a silent routing bridge to its canonical descriptor. In MeSH, "heart attack" routes to "Myocardial Infarction" and "AZT" to "Zidovudine"; the alias carries no indexing status, and the search interface expands it silently.
Scope of Application¶
Lives within controlled-vocabulary practice, where a curated non-preferred form routes many-to-one, silently and non-indexing, to a canonical descriptor.

Clarity¶
Naming the alias makes legible that it is subordinate routing metadata, not a symmetric synonym. Many terms route to one descriptor; the descriptor merely lists them and never routes back. The recurring question stops being "are these the same concept?" and becomes "is this a curated alias that should route inward, or a distinct concept deserving its own descriptor?"
Manages Complexity¶
A vocabulary must stay small and stable yet reachable by every surface form a user might type — two demands that pull apart. The alias splits the problem across two surfaces: unbounded variation is absorbed at the input surface as non-indexing aliases, while the output surface stays exactly the canonical descriptor set. Reach and coherence are then governed separately.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The directed, non-indexing, many-to-one route licenses diagnostic inference (an unreachable concept means a missing alias; an alias accreting records breached the non-indexing rule), interventionist prediction (adding an alias raises reach while provably leaving the indexed space invariant), boundary-drawing (alias-routing versus symmetric synonymy; active-inward versus sunset-forward), and a two-surface factoring governing reach and coherence apart.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within controlled-vocabulary practice the concept transfers as mechanism — MeSH, LCSH UF, AAT, and SKOS altLabel are co-instances. Beyond it the routing mechanism genuinely recurs (DNS CNAMEs, symlinks, DOI redirects, "did you mean"), but the non-indexing rule and two-surface guarantee stay home-bound, having no analogue where there is no indexed corpus. What travels is the parent: many-to-one function_mapping plus a canonical-form policy.
