Environmental Kuznets curve

The hypothesis that environmental degradation follows an inverted-U against per-capita income — rising as a poor economy industrializes, peaking at middle income, then falling as richer populations buy cleaner technique — holding only for local, internalized pollutants, not global-commons ones.

Manages Complexity

The growth-and-environment tangle of interacting drivers compresses into one low-dimensional object: a hump of degradation against income, summarized by the turning-point income. Locating a country pre- or post-peak reads off its trajectory without modeling the full causal web. But the compression is load-bearing only with its parameters explicit, so the analyst carries a fixed checklist — turning point, dominant channel, pollutant type, outsourcing-adjusted aggregate.
