Naming the estuary does definitional work "river mouth" cannot: the Cameron-Pritchard requirement separates a true estuary from a river (no marine salt), the open coast (no retention), a lagoon (mixing without riverine forcing), and an underfed fjord. That boundary is load-bearing because it picks out systems where the salinity gradient is the organising variable. Its sharper payoff is making distinctive properties follow from a few measurable parameters — forcing balance, residence time — rather than a list of coincidental features, and making dual-flank vulnerability legible.

A coastal mixing zone presents a daunting catalogue — shifting salinity at every depth, sediment plumes, watershed nutrients, tidal energy, a habitat mosaic, dozens of species.
