Extra dimensions¶
Hypothesized spatial or temporal dimensions beyond the observed three spatial dimensions and one time dimension, used in higher-dimensional physical theories.
Core Idea¶
Extra dimensions are additional independent spacetime coordinates posited by a physical model beyond those directly evident at macroscopic scales. Fields or geometry extend into a higher-dimensional space while compactification, warping or confinement suppresses direct low-energy observation and induces effective particles or forces in four dimensions. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of theoretical physics. It is higher-dimensional physical degrees of freedom hidden or restricted in observed effective spacetime.
