A facial feature is recognized faster and more accurately embedded in a complete upright face than in isolation — a counter-featural advantage whose direction proves that a configural, whole-based processing system, not part-by-part analysis, mediates recognition.
Core Idea¶
The face superiority effect is the finding that an individual facial feature — an eye, a nose, a mouth — is recognized more accurately and rapidly when embedded in a complete, upright face than in isolation or a scrambled context. The direction is the critical point: it runs opposite to what a part-by-part featural system predicts, where more surrounding material should only add competition. The effect is thus evidence that recognition is mediated by a configural system in which the spatial relations among features carry discriminative information featural analysis cannot.
