Facial feedback hypothesis¶
The hypothesis that producing or inhibiting a facial expression can causally alter the intensity or quality of the corresponding emotional experience.
Core Idea¶
Strong versions claim facial activity can initiate emotion, while weak versions claim modulation; demand effects, task awareness, bodily context, replication variation and measurement sensitivity complicate evidence. Proprioceptive and interoceptive signals from facial configuration enter appraisal and affective processing, shifting experienced emotion or evaluation rather than merely displaying an already formed state. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
