Climate & Earth-System Feedback Processes¶
← Back to Domain-Specific Families
Abstractions about Earth's climate and ecological systems, including atmospheric and oceanic circulation such as general circulation models and the Australian northwest cloudband, reinforcing feedback and cycling processes like ice-albedo feedback, cloud feedback and the carbon cycle, and modeling frameworks for ecosystems and hazards such as the NPZ model and wildfire modeling.
15 abstractions in this family — domain-specific abstractions that sit near one another in structural-signature space (k-means over structural-signature embeddings). Each is shown with its short description.
- Australian Northwest Cloudband — A broad northwest-to-southeast moisture-laden cloud band linking the tropical eastern Indian Ocean with southern Australia, chiefly in the cool season.
- Carbon cycle — The coupled movement and transformation of carbon among atmosphere, oceans, organisms, soils, sediments and rocks.
- Carbon leakage — The increase in greenhouse-gas emissions outside a regulated region caused by mitigation policy inside it, relative to the emissions reduction achieved there.
- Climate as complex networks — A climate-analysis framework representing spatial locations or variables as nodes and statistically significant dependence between their time series as edges.
- Cloud feedback — Quantify how a climate-driven change in cloud amount, altitude, phase, optical depth, or spatial distribution alters shortwave and longwave top-of-atmosphere radiation and thereby amplifies or damps the initiating temperature change.
- Emission intensity — The mass or amount of a specified pollutant emitted per unit of a specified activity, output, energy, distance, revenue or economic production over an aligned boundary and period.
- Fixed anvil temperature hypothesis — A tropical-climate hypothesis that deep convective anvil-cloud tops emit at nearly fixed temperature as surface climate changes because clear-sky radiative cooling collapses at a characteristic upper-tropospheric temperature.
- Freezing rain — Supercooled liquid precipitation that freezes on contact with surfaces at or below freezing, producing a coating of glaze ice.
- General circulation model — A three-dimensional numerical model of planetary atmosphere or ocean circulation built from fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and radiative or surface processes.
- Ice–albedo feedback — A reinforcing climate feedback in which ice or snow loss lowers reflectivity and increases absorbed solar energy and warming, while ice gain raises reflectivity and promotes further cooling.
- Lake ecosystem — Treat a lake as a coupled lentic ecosystem whose water column, sediments, shoreline zones, organisms, energy capture, and nutrient fluxes interact under depth, residence time, and mixing regimes.
- NPZ model — A dynamical pelagic-ecosystem model representing nutrient, phytoplankton and zooplankton pools through coupled uptake, grazing, mortality and recycling rates.
- Pan evaporation — A field measure of open-water loss from a standardized pan used as an integrated climatic proxy for evaporative demand.
- Terraforming — The hypothetical deliberate alteration of a planet, moon, or other body’s atmosphere, temperature, surface, and ecology to sustain Earth-like life or human habitation.
- Wildfire modeling — Represent and simulate wildland-fire behavior or effects by coupling a fire state with declared fuel, weather, terrain, heat-transfer, spread, and uncertainty assumptions at a chosen scale, while separating empirical, semi-empirical, physical, and atmosphere-coupled model classes.
