Faceted Classification & Metadata¶
Abstractions about describing resources along independent, combinable classification axes rather than single precoordinated headings — topic, form, geographic, and method facets, plus dataset boundary documentation (data card, method-as-metadata).

- Data Card — Attach a fixed-schema documentation artifact to a dataset at its publication boundary — recording motivation, composition, recommended and out-of-scope uses, consent, and known limitations — so a consumer meets the dataset's boundary conditions at the same moment as the data.
- Faceted Vocabulary — Describe a referent by selecting one value per orthogonal, independently combinable axis (material, period, function) instead of matching a single precoordinated heading, so N facets of M values express an N×M space while you maintain only the sum of the value lists.
- Form Facet — Reserve one classification axis in a faceted catalog for genre, document type, or format — assigned independently of topic — so 'what kind of object is this' and 'what is it about' become separate, combinable filters.
- Geographic Facet — Treat spatial location as a separable description axis in a faceted catalog — assigning place independently of topic, form, and period, and binding it to a controlled place authority so the same location is referenced consistently and can be filtered on its own.
- Method-as-Metadata — The cataloging move of recording how a resource was produced or what procedure it employs as a first-class, controlled-vocabulary field — orthogonal to topic, creator, date, and form — so a corpus becomes filterable by technique without reading each item.
- Topic Facet — Isolate what a resource is about as a single independently selectable axis in a faceted classification, so topical queries combine with place, time, and form filters at query time instead of being fused in advance into precoordinated compound headings.
