- Absolute dating — The estimation of an event or object's numerical age or calendar range rather than only its relative order.
- Coastal sediment transport — Move and sort sediment alongshore and cross-shore through wave, current, tide, surge and wind forcing, continually coupling seabed grain properties to evolving beaches, bars, dunes and inlets.
- Complex (geology) — A lithodemic unit grouping two or more lithodemes from more than one genetic class where ordinary stratigraphic succession is not an adequate organizing principle.
- Erosion and tectonics — The coupled feedback by which tectonic deformation creates relief that drives erosion while erosion redistributes mass and alters stress, uplift and deformation.

- Paleoliquefaction — Geologic evidence of prehistoric earthquake-induced soil liquefaction, used to infer shaking events that predate instrumental or written records.
- Pediment (geology) — A gently sloping erosional bedrock surface extending from the foot of a retreating upland, commonly bearing only a thin veneer of transported sediment.
- Postglacial vegetation — Plant communities and succession established on land exposed after glacial retreat.
- Principle of lateral continuity — The stratigraphic principle that sedimentary layers initially extend laterally until they thin, grade, terminate against a basin boundary or are cut by later erosion.
- Provenance (geology) — The source regions, parent rocks and transport histories from which sediment or sedimentary rock was derived, inferred by integrating mineralogical, geochemical, geochronological and textural evidence.
- Sadler effect — The inverse dependence of measured sediment accumulation rate on the duration of the measurement interval, caused by hiatuses and erosion increasingly captured at longer timescales.
- Torrejonian — A North American Land Mammal Age interval in the early Paleocene defined and correlated through characteristic terrestrial mammal assemblages.
- Trilobite zone — A Cambrian biostratigraphic interval recognized by the occurrence or assemblage of characteristic trilobite taxa and used to correlate rock successions.
- Westphalian (stage) — A regional northwest-European Carboniferous stratigraphic stage associated with major coal-measure successions and historically divided into lettered substages.
