Information Control & Disclosure Failures

← Back to Domain-Specific Families

Abstractions that loosely share only a concern with controlling, tracking or misrepresenting information — timed-release and confidentiality arrangements (embargo, off the record), signals whose apparent meaning outruns the underlying reality (milestone theater, secret sprawl), and bibliographic identity at the level of a single copy (item).

5 abstractions in this family — domain-specific abstractions that sit near one another in structural-signature space (k-means over structural-signature embeddings). Each is shown with its short description.

  • Embargo — Distribute information in advance to a credentialed recipient set who agree to withhold publication until a shared release time, collapsing everyone's head start to zero — enforced by exclusion from future distributions, not by law.
  • Item (Copy) — Promote the single physical or digital copy to a first-class bibliographic entity at the bottom of the Work–Expression–Manifestation–Item ladder, so copy-specific data and operations attach to one instance rather than the shared edition.
  • Milestone Theater — Read a green milestone as a signal with its own production economics rather than a fact — the multi-clause readiness it was meant to certify can be marked done with clauses deferred, so test it by asking what would look different had it genuinely been met.
  • Off the Record — Treat a source's condition as a post-transmission use-license: the information is transmitted and the journalist's orientation affected, but a defined class of downstream speech acts — publication, attribution, citation as evidence — is barred until the source upgrades or an independent source confirms.
  • Secret Sprawl — Diagnose a credential's danger not by whether its primary store is locked but by whether its copies have spread into more places than the issuer tracks, so revocability collapses and rotation cost scales with the unknown copy count.
