Memory Storage, Retrieval & Encoding¶
← Back to Domain-Specific Families
Abstractions that model how information is stored, encoded, and retrieved, spanning human-memory systems (Atkinson-Shiffrin memory model, storage, recall, cue-dependent forgetting), external and encoded memory aids (exosomatic memory, error-correcting code, online codes), and related computational constructs for ordering and messaging (heapsort, higher-order message).
9 abstractions in this family — domain-specific abstractions that sit near one another in structural-signature space (k-means over structural-signature embeddings). Each is shown with its short description.
- Atkinson–Shiffrin memory model — A three-store human-memory model with task-dependent control processes for transfer and retrieval.
- Cue-dependent forgetting — Failure to recall learned material when the semantic, environmental, or internal-state cues needed for retrieval are absent or mismatched.
- Error-Correcting Code — An error-correcting code is a specified set of valid codewords together with an encoding map, channel or error model, distance or recoverability structure, and decoding rule that introduces controlled redundancy so transmitted or stored information can be detected or reconstructed despite an admissible class of errors or erasures.
- Exosomatic Memory — Intentionally encoded information outside the body that can be retrieved as a memory aid.
- Heapsort — A comparison sort that builds a heap and repeatedly extracts its extremal element to produce an ordered sequence.
- Higher-Order Message — A message-oriented construct that captures a following message as data and interprets it through an outer message to transform iteration, timing, routing, or delivery.
- Online Codes — Rateless erasure codes with locally generated check blocks and staged probabilistic message recovery.
- Recall (Memory) — The memory process of retrieving previously encoded information without that information being fully re-presented, whether freely, in a requested order, or with partial cues.
- Storage (memory) — The retention of encoded information across time for later recognition or retrieval in a memory system.
