Orbital Mechanics & Celestial Dynamics¶
← Back to Domain-Specific Families
Abstractions about the motion and configuration of astronomical bodies, covering orbital elements and maneuvers (Longitude of the Ascending Node, Orbital Inclination Change, Universal Variable Formulation), binary and multi-body systems (Binary System, Binary Mass Function, Lissajous Orbit), and observational phenomena like Astronomical Transit and Gravitational Keyhole.
13 abstractions in this family — domain-specific abstractions that sit near one another in structural-signature space (k-means over structural-signature embeddings). Each is shown with its short description.
- Astronomical transit — The apparent passage of a nearer, smaller celestial body across the visible disk of a more distant, larger body from a particular observer's line of sight.
- Binary mass function — An observable combination of period and radial-velocity amplitude that gives a lower-bound constraint on an unseen companion's mass in a single-lined binary or planetary system.
- Binary system — An astronomical system of two comparable bodies gravitationally bound around a common barycenter, often distinguished from a primary with a negligible satellite.
- Gravitational keyhole — A narrow region in a planetary encounter plane through which a small body's passage would gravitationally redirect it onto a resonant future impact trajectory.
- Levitation (physics) — The stable suspension of an object against gravity without direct mechanical contact, produced by an upward force together with restoring forces that resist displacement.
- Lissajous orbit — A generally quasiperiodic three-dimensional trajectory oscillating around a collinear Lagrange point of a three-body system.
- Longitude of the ascending node — An orbital element measuring in a chosen reference plane the directed angle from a reference direction to the point where an orbit crosses that plane northward.
- Orbital Eccentricity — Orbital eccentricity is the dimensionless shape parameter that classifies an ideal conic orbit independently of its size or orientation.
- Orbital inclination change — An orbital maneuver that rotates an orbit's plane by changing the velocity vector near a line where the initial and desired planes intersect.
- Orbital state vectors — A position vector and velocity vector at a specified epoch in a specified reference frame that together determine an orbiting body's instantaneous translational state for a declared dynamical model.
- Satellite gravimetry — Measurement of Earth's static and time-varying gravity field from satellite orbits, inter-satellite ranging or onboard accelerometry to infer mass distribution and redistribution.
- Terminator orbit — An orbit around a small Solar System body whose plane remains near perpendicular to the body–Sun line, keeping the spacecraft close to the moving day–night terminator.
- Universal variable formulation — A two-body orbital-propagation formulation using universal anomaly and Stumpff functions to handle elliptic parabolic and hyperbolic trajectories in one equation family.
