  • Alluvial Fan — The fan-shaped sediment landform built where a confined, sediment-laden channel exits a steep upland at a slope break, loses transport competence, and deposits its load coarse-to-fine as successive lobes avulse radially around the apex.
  • Deposition — The process by which material carried by a transporting medium is laid down where the medium's carrying capacity falls below its load — coarsest and densest first — so the deposit's geometry records the energy history of the transport that ended there.

  • River Channel Migration — The progressive relocation of an active alluvial river channel across its floodplain as spatially unequal bank erosion and bar or bank accretion move its planform while flow, sediment, bank strength, and vegetation continually feed back on the new geometry.
  • Sediment Budget — Account for sediment as a mass-balance ledger of sources and sinks over a bounded coastal or fluvial cell, so the running balance — not the last storm — tells whether the shoreline is accreting, stable, or eroding.
  • Sediment Transport — Loose grains are entrained by a moving fluid once shear exceeds their threshold of motion, carried in a mode set by the ratio of shear to settling velocity, and deposited as the carrier loses energy — sorting coarse-to-fine along the gradient into a graded deposit that records the flow.
