Fay's trisecant identity¶
A three-term relation among curve-theta products at four-point Abel shifts, weighted by prime forms on the same Riemann surface.
Core Idea¶
Fay's trisecant identity is an exact three-term equation for the theta function associated with a compact Riemann surface. Four points on the curve determine Abel-integral shifts of the theta argument and prime-form weights for paired theta values. Two weighted products add to a third.[ref-7449a6d5dcd2][ref-7effd8cfeea6] The coefficients and shifts come from the same curve and point configuration, so the arrangement works across admissible curves and point choices when their data are used consistently.
Scope of Application¶
The formula applies to compact-curve theta data with four points, compatible Abel shifts and matching prime forms.[^ref-7449a6d5dcd2]
- General compact curves: DLMF states the genus-\(g\) formula with curve-specific Abel integrals and prime forms.[^ref-7449a6d5dcd2]
- Elliptic curves: a normalized genus-one Jacobi-theta form gives a four-point version.[^ref-f387968d245e]
- Higher-genus hyperelliptic curves: the prime-form formula helps derive theta-functional Ernst results.[^ref-7effd8cfeea6]
- Geometric use: the identity implies Jacobian Kummer trisecants under the curve hypothesis.[^ref-006d9c7f9f68]
Clarity¶
“Four-point” counts the curve points, whereas “three-term” counts weighted theta products and Abel shifts come from paths between those points.[ref-7449a6d5dcd2][ref-7effd8cfeea6] Arbitrary shifts do not give the same identity, and a change in point order must carry signs, prime-form factors and shifts together.
A Jacobian variety is the curve-associated geometric carrier, while Fay's identity is an equation using curve theta and prime-form data.[ref-7449a6d5dcd2][ref-006d9c7f9f68] The identity implies a geometric Kummer trisecant under its curve hypothesis,[^ref-006d9c7f9f68] but that conclusion is distinct from the equation, and Krichever's converse requires additional conditions, including indecomposability.[^ref-006d9c7f9f68]
Manages Complexity¶
To identify a proposed instance, check four roles in order: the curve and its theta function; four points with compatible Abel shifts; the paired prime-form weights or a sourced elliptic normalization; and the three-term equality of theta products.[ref-7449a6d5dcd2][ref-f387968d245e][^ref-7effd8cfeea6] Each test excludes a different failure: a wrong carrier, unrelated shifts, lost weights, or an equation with the wrong number of terms. This prevents a similar-looking addition formula or a later application from being mistaken for the unmodified identity.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The equation says the three weighted products cannot vary independently once the curve and point data are fixed: the third is determined by the other two.[^ref-7449a6d5dcd2] Mathematical Relation is the broader type of exact equation instantiated here. Fay's specific curve, Abel and prime-form roles distinguish it from other mathematical relations. A generic three-term equation without those roles is not another Fay instance.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Transfer the role test between an elliptic form and a higher-genus form, allowing for each source's normalization and point convention.[ref-f387968d245e][ref-7effd8cfeea6] Applications need an extra bridge: elliptic dimer work derives a telescoping corollary before using it in a Kasteleyn-operator construction, while hyperelliptic Ernst work uses Fay identities together with their degenerations and Rauch variational formulas.[ref-f387968d245e][ref-7effd8cfeea6] These are different targets with different added steps, even though both rely on curve-theta information. Those uses do not expand the literal formula to arbitrary operators or integrable equations.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Fay's trisecant identity sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (83rd percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
