A field boundary marker is the labeled operational edge of a recognized research field — a named category assigned to a paper, person, project, or funding request to route it to the appropriate expert community. It bundles three committed elements: a named field, a membership convention (the rule by which work is counted in or out), and a routing use (reviewer assignment, panel placement, search facet, desk-rejection). Its commitment is operational, not ontological: it holds at decision time while staying silent on what field the work really belongs to.

The field boundary marker lives entirely within one substrate — the administration of research knowledge — across its institutional settings.

The fuzziness is structural, not a defect, and a sharper audit question becomes available: which convention, what routing decision, what does it systematically miscount?
Manages Complexity¶
The body of knowledge is far too large to survey when a routing decision is forced. The marker compresses this by pre-chunking the knowledge space into named bins tracking expert communities, so "where should this be reviewed?" collapses from a global search into a bounded lookup on three tracked things — named field, membership convention, routing use. The deeper compression is what it lets the analyst stop tracking: the intractable ontology of where fields truly begin, set aside because the marker commits at decision time and stays silent past it.
