File Comparison¶
A pairwise operation that detects and reports differences between two file or document states under a declared comparison basis.
Core Idea¶
File comparison checks two file or document states under a declared basis and reports their differences. A text tool may compare lines; a document tool may include text, comments, or formatting. What counts as a difference depends on that basis. Neither a shortest edit script nor a patch is required.[ref-47c7d5bbdd86][ref-18f93d99cab9]
Scope of Application¶
The method needs two states, a comparison basis, a procedure that detects differences, and a result tied to those states. GNU Diffutils 3.12 documents line-oriented text comparison and reduced bytewise or brief reports. Microsoft documents a two-version Word legal blackline for specified desktop Windows versions. The cited product pages describe available workflows, not observed outcomes in a particular repository or legal matter.[ref-47c7d5bbdd86][ref-18f93d99cab9]
Clarity¶
Name both inputs, the content dimensions included or ignored, and the form of the result. GNU can suppress whitespace or case differences. Word lets the user select text, comments, and formatting and choose character or word display of changes; the cited page does not reveal its internal matching algorithm.[ref-47c7d5bbdd86][ref-18f93d99cab9]
Manages Complexity¶
A comparison turns two large artifacts into a report of relevant differences. GNU unified output places changed line groups beside surrounding context. Word normally shows marked changes in a new third document. If the user instead chooses Original or Revised as the display destination, Word modifies that chosen document.[ref-47c7d5bbdd86][ref-18f93d99cab9]
Abstract Reasoning¶
First identify the two states, then decide what differences matter. Compare under that basis and read the resulting report with its exclusions in mind. Applying a patch, accepting revisions, merging several reviewers, or managing version history is a further task. This is an unparented specialist root in the ontology: Prime Comparison inherits Self Checking roles that ordinary two-version file comparison need not have.[ref-47c7d5bbdd86][ref-18f93d99cab9]
Knowledge Transfer¶
The same four roles work in source-file and structured-document settings. Transfer the pair–basis–detection–report procedure, then specify the local representation. A Word blackline is not automatically an applicable GNU patch, and a line hunk does not show Word formatting changes.[ref-47c7d5bbdd86][ref-18f93d99cab9]
Example¶
GNU text comparison. Two text files are the paired states; newline-delimited lines, with any stated ignored whitespace or case, are the basis; diff finds common sequences and differing hunks as detection; unified output is the report, with added and removed lines and nearby context. The manual does not promise a globally minimal edit script. Patch application is optional.[^ref-47c7d5bbdd86]
Word legal blackline. Original and Revised documents are the paired states; selected text, comments, and formatting are the basis, while character/word controls change how revisions are displayed; Word's undisclosed internal comparison supplies detection; by default, a third document with marked changes is the report. The alternate output choice can modify a selected source. This is unlike GNU's line-hunk report while retaining all four roles.[^ref-18f93d99cab9]
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
File Comparison sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (100th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.

Not to Be Confused With¶
A side-by-side view without difference detection is not yet this operation. Word Combine handles multiple reviewers, not the two-version legal blackline. A suitable GNU diff may feed patch, but the comparison and later file update are distinct. A report relative to selected dimensions does not prove that two files have the same meaning.[ref-47c7d5bbdd86][ref-18f93d99cab9]
