Fire Point¶
The lowest temperature at which a liquid fuel's vapour continues burning for a specified duration after standardized ignition, measured by a defined fire-point test and distinct from flash point and autoignition temperature.
Core Idea¶
Fire point operationalizes sustained flammability of a heated liquid. It asks not merely whether vapour can flash, but whether the sample generates vapour rapidly enough to keep burning after ignition.
The number belongs to a test system. Apparatus, duration rule, pressure, heating rate, sample history, and composition must travel with any comparison or safety use.
Scope of Application¶
- Fuel characterization. Compares sustained-burning thresholds.
- Material safety data. Supports hazard communication under cited methods.
- Quality control. Detects formulation or contamination changes.
- Fire engineering. Uses measured properties within broader hazard analysis.
Clarity¶
Report substance and batch, composition, conditioning, pressure, method and apparatus, heating rate, ignition source, duration criterion, calibration, replicate behavior, units, uncertainty, and distinction from flash and autoignition values. Testing belongs to qualified laboratories. Inclusion test: Require a standardized external-ignition test of a liquid in which flame persists for the specified duration at the reported sample temperature. Exclusion test: Exclude flash point, autoignition temperature, flame temperature, a guessed value obtained by adding a fixed offset, and uncontrolled demonstrations of burning. Nearest boundary: Flash point marks enough vapour for a brief ignitable event; fire point marks enough sustained vapour generation for continued combustion under the method. Exit condition: The value cannot be transferred without accounting for method, pressure, sample composition, heating rate, contamination, and pass/fail duration. Common misclassifications: Fire point is not flash point. It is not autoignition temperature. A ten-degree offset is not a universal substitution for testing. The result is not method-independent. Nearest named distinctions: Flash point: Requires ignition but only a transient flash. Autoignition temperature: Requires ignition without an external flame. Flame temperature: Is the temperature of combustion products. Boiling point: Marks a phase-equilibrium condition rather than combustion persistence.
Manages Complexity¶
One temperature summarizes coupled evaporation, mixing, ignition, heat feedback, and method geometry. Its utility depends on refusing to detach the result from the standardized experiment.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Identify the safety or characterization question and governing standard.
- Use qualified laboratory data for the exact sample and method.
- Verify that the criterion is sustained flame, not transient flash or self-ignition.
- Compare only compatible apparatus and environmental conditions.
- Integrate the value with other fire properties rather than treating it as a complete hazard rating.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The sustained-versus-transient distinction transfers across fuels, but numeric fire points do not transfer among mixtures or methods. This description is conceptual and not a testing procedure.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Fire Point sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (34th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
