First break picking¶
Detection of the earliest coherent seismic arrival time on each recorded trace for near-surface velocity and timing analysis.
Core Idea¶
Manual, statistical and machine-assisted pickers distinguish the first refracted or direct arrival from noise using amplitude, phase, correlation or multitrace coherence, with uncertainty propagated into inversion and static correction. A trace is filtered or represented, an onset score is evaluated through time, spatial consistency across receivers constrains candidates and the earliest qualifying arrival is recorded with confidence. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
