Froude Number

A dimensionless speed–gravity–length comparison used to assess gravity-mediated motion and bounded dynamic similarity.

Core Idea

The Froude number compares a speed with a gravity-and-length speed scale. Fluid engineering often writes \(Fr=v/\sqrt{gL}\), where \(L\) is a characteristic length selected for the setting. The ratio is dimensionless and helps compare motion when gravitational influence is important. It does not, by itself, guarantee that two flows, ships or gaits behave identically.[ref-be83dcf568b6][ref-6431b09ead39][^ref-a6057cc76720]

Some gait research calls \(v^2/(gL)\) the Froude number, with \(v/\sqrt{gL}\) its square-root dimensionless speed. The conventions rank nonnegative speeds alike but yield different numbers: a threshold stated in one convention must be transformed before comparing it with another.[^ref-774c5b329a3a]

Scope of Application

In an open channel, hydraulic depth \(D=A/T\)—cross-sectional area divided by water-surface top width—serves as \(L\). USGS derives \(Fr=v/\sqrt{gD}\) and \(Fr=1\) at critical flow, where mean flow velocity matches the small gravity-wave speed under that model. This is a channel-specific threshold, not a universal boundary for ships or animals.[^ref-be83dcf568b6]

In towing-tank work, ITTC records a length Froude number, normally using waterline length, and a separate depth Froude number. Reynolds number, viscous friction and tank corrections remain distinct. In gait studies, leg length scales forward speed across different-sized animals; Alexander and Jayes report stronger same-Fr gait correspondence among cursorial quadrupeds than across less alike animals. Later gait work shows equality alone need not match leg stiffness or landing motion.[ref-6431b09ead39][ref-879c6bab31e3][^ref-a6057cc76720]

Clarity

Before reporting Fr, name the speed, gravity, length and mathematical convention. A channel's hydraulic depth, a ship's waterline length and an animal's leg length are not interchangeable. Nor is the number a ship's hull speed: hull speed is a particular speed-scale application, while a vessel has a length Fr at any speed. The frozen Wikipedia candidate was Hull Speed, and Froude Number is the distinct reframe target.[ref-be83dcf568b6][ref-6431b09ead39]

The fluid form \(v/\sqrt{gL}\) and gait form \(v^2/(gL)\) have different numeric thresholds. A gait \(Fr=0.5\) in the squared form corresponds to about $0.707$ on the square-root scale. Formula, not the name alone, determines what can be compared.[^ref-774c5b329a3a]

Manages Complexity

One dimensionless coordinate compresses speed, gravity and size. It shows when an open-channel current approaches a gravity-wave speed and gives ship testers a way to compare wave-related behavior at different model scales. Leg-length-scaled speed similarly helps frame a cross-size gait hypothesis.[ref-be83dcf568b6][ref-6431b09ead39][^ref-879c6bab31e3]

The compression omits other governing variables. Model friction depends on Reynolds-related effects; gait patterns can depend on stiffness and contact dynamics. Equal Fr should initiate a controlled comparison, followed by explicit checks of whatever else determines the outcome.[ref-6431b09ead39][ref-a6057cc76720]

Abstract Reasoning

Identify the gravity-mediated behavior, choose its physically relevant \(L\), state the ratio's convention, then compute and compare like with like. Ask precisely what matching Fr is supposed to predict. USGS's \(Fr=1\) channel derivation addresses critical flow; ITTC's ship Fr helps organize model resistance measurements without equating all drag; gait Fr provides a size-normalized test of some locomotion features without forcing full similarity.[ref-be83dcf568b6][ref-6431b09ead39][^ref-a6057cc76720]

Knowledge Transfer

Hydraulic channels, ship models and animals share a speed–gravity–length normalization, but not one universal transition threshold or identical outcome dynamics. The literal transfer is the practice of matching a declared dimensionless physical comparison and then testing remaining variables. Froude Number is a proposed strict child of the live Dimensionless Quantity entry; Reynolds Number is a distinct related measure, not its parent. The gravity-specific formula makes this entry domain-specific despite its reach across fields.[ref-6431b09ead39][ref-774c5b329a3a]
