Fugue¶
Build a piece from a short distinctive melodic subject that enters voice by voice and returns across the work, so several genuinely independent lines imitate one idea while sounding coherent harmony at every beat.
Core Idea¶
A fugue is a contrapuntal form built by imitative development of a short distinctive melodic subject. One voice states the subject; the others take it up in turn — the answer transposed to the dominant — until the exposition is complete. A countersubject fits against it, episodes develop motivic fragments between entries, and the stretto overlaps entries late as intensification before a closing home-key statement. Throughout, each voice must stand alone melodically while all combine into coherent harmony.
Scope of Application¶
The fugue lives within music, wherever Western tonal grammar and combinable independent voices hold.
- Western art music — the home turf: the central contrapuntal form through Bach, revived by Beethoven and Shostakovich.
- Jazz — fugal sections adapt the subject-and-imitation device (Tristano, Mehldau).
- Film and television scoring — fugal expositions signify intelligence, intricacy, or pursuit.
- Conservatory counterpoint pedagogy — fugue writing teaches voice-leading and motivic-harmonic relationship.
- Algorithmic composition — explicit rules make it a recurrent computer-music target since the Illiac Suite (1957).
- Music-theory exposition — the canonical worked example for teaching counterpoint and combinability.
Clarity¶
Naming the fugue sorts it from neighbouring forms it is confused with — canon (exact imitation at a fixed offset), invention (lacks the full apparatus), passacaglia and chaconne (built over a bass), theme-and-variations (no imitation). It keeps "complex polyphony" from being mistaken for the form. It also lets a composer ask combinability before the fact: not "is this a good melody?" but "is this a viable subject?" — a decidable property of the material rather than an intuition.
Manages Complexity¶
Writing several self-sufficient lines that also produce coherent harmony at every beat is combinatorially crushing note by note. The fugue loads nearly all that constraint into two decisions made once: choose a subject that survives transposition and stacks in stretto, and write a countersubject that fits cleanly. Once the material passes these tests, the grammar's named slots — exposition, episode, stretto, closing entry — largely determine the rest, so the composer reasons over a handful of decisions instead of an unbounded search.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The fugue licenses subject-viability prediction (inferring from a bare melody whether it yields a viable form), constraint front-loading (pouring vetted material into the grammar's slots), entry-tracking (mapping the piece by locating the subject through its disguises), intensification-locating (reading the stretto as a late, near-close compression), and boundary-drawing (identifying the form by which structural commitments are in force). Each turns on a recognizable invariant under transformation and the named landmark grammar.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within music the fugue transfers as technique, the full apparatus carrying intact across instruments, ensembles, and periods — the same grammar Bach codified is the one Beethoven and Shostakovich deploy, and it travels into jazz, film scoring, pedagogy, and algorithmic composition unchanged. Beyond music the reach is only analogy: multi-threaded argument or parallel storytelling invoke a recurring subject across parallel lines but lose the grammar that makes a fugue a fugue. That thin residue is already carried by the parent primes motif (a recurring distinctive element) and counterpoint (combining independent lines), which should travel instead.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Fugue sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (21st percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
