Functional Communication

Judge a communicative act by whether it accomplishes a needed real-world function with a real partner — request, refuse, greet, comment, ask for help — rather than by its phonological accuracy or grammaticality, reclassifying every non-speech channel as a first-class success.

Functional communication is a clinical orientation in speech-language pathology and AAC in which a communicative act is judged by whether it accomplishes a needed function in the user's real environment, rather than by its phonological accuracy, grammaticality, or fidelity to a target form. A pointed picture, a reliable gesture, or a device phrase all count as success if they let the speaker request, refuse, greet, comment, or ask for help. The mechanism is a reorientation of the success criterion from formal correctness to ecological function.

Scope of Application

Functional communication lives across the speech-language-pathology and AAC tradition, across the populations and settings where a productive communicator is assessed or rehabilitated.
