Functional Fixedness

The cognitive bias in which encoding an object under its conventional category label crowds out inspection of its raw physical properties, blocking the solver from a non-conventional use the problem needs and the object's properties would permit.

Core Idea

Functional fixedness is the cognitive bias in which a solver, having encoded an object under its conventional category label, becomes unable to retrieve its physical properties for any use outside the label's standard affordances — even when the problem requires exactly that. The mechanism is representational: encountering the object triggers the category ("box of tacks"), whose function-set crowds out the raw property list where the novel affordance lives. It is strongest right after conventional use, as Duncker's candle problem shows.

Clarity

Naming functional fixedness makes legible a distinction ordinary talk fuses: what an object is (its raw properties) versus what its category says it is for. A stuck solver looks merely uncreative; with the concept, the failure localizes to the retrieved representation — the tag pre-empted the property list — not the object or the solver's ability. It also yields a counterintuitive prediction: expertise can hurt, because reliable labels bind tighter where repurposing is required.

Manages Complexity

Insight-failure data looks like an unrelated heap — candle-box, two-string, design fixation, developmental onset, the expert-novice reversal. Functional fixedness collapses the set onto one regularity: the retrieved tag pre-empts the property list where the novel affordance lives. The researcher then tracks a tag-strength dial (strongest after use, weaker under description, decomposition, delay, fresh context; stronger with expertise) and a fixed four-item unlock set, reading the outcome off rather than re-deriving it.

Abstract Reasoning

The concept supports a diagnostic move (run a stuck solver back to the loaded tag, with recency and expertise as confirming inferences), an interventionist move (apply one of four unlocks — neutral re-description, decomposition, delay, unfamiliar context — each with a directional prediction), boundary-drawing (in force only when properties permit the use and a category is loaded; distinct from Einstellung and path dependence), and an order-of-events prediction along the encode-retrieve-pre-empt-block sequence.
