Functional group (ecology)¶
A set of organisms grouped by similar ecological effects, resource use, traits, or roles rather than common ancestry alone.

Ecological functional groups compress species diversity into role classes such as nitrogen fixers, grazers, pollinators, decomposers, or growth-form groups for studying ecosystem processes and response. Measured traits and interactions link organisms to resource acquisition, transformation, or environmental effects; aggregation then supports models of redundancy, response diversity, and ecosystem function. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
