Global Ecophagy¶
A hypothetical global-scale consumption or transformation of ecosystems severe enough to collapse biospheric diversity and self-repair capacity.
Core Idea¶
Global ecophagy names a limiting ecological catastrophe: the living organization of the planet is consumed or transformed faster than it can repair itself. Freitas introduced it for a grey-goo model in which autonomous molecular replicators convert biomass into more replicators until ecosystems disappear.
Later usage broadens the driver to nuclear war, monoculture, mass extinction, or cumulative human expansion. What unifies these uses is not merely severe environmental harm, but propagation or persistence across coupled ecosystems and the loss of biospheric recovery capacity. Because mechanisms differ radically, the term is best treated as a scenario class whose global reach and stopping conditions require explicit support.
Structural Signature¶
Sig role-phrases:
- consuming or transforming driver — removes biomass, habitat, or ecological organization faster than recovery It is essential. Counterfactual: Damage without an operative driver is not a scenario explanation.
- self-propagation or cumulative persistence — allows local damage to continue and spread without timely containment It is essential. Counterfactual: A bounded event that naturally stops lacks the runaway or systemic reach.
- ecosystem substrate — provides living populations and relations being converted or destroyed It is essential. Counterfactual: Resource consumption with no ecological object is not ecophagy.
- global coupling — connects regional losses into planetary consequence It is essential. Counterfactual: Severe local ecocide is not yet global ecophagy.
- loss of self-repair — marks the transition from damage to persistent biospheric collapse It is essential. Counterfactual: If recovery mechanisms remain robust, the scenario has not reached the defining endpoint.
- containment failure — explains why feedback or intervention cannot stop propagation It is diagnostic. Counterfactual: A model that assumes unstoppable spread without testing limits is incomplete.
What It Is Not¶
- It is not every form of pollution or ecological damage.
- It is not limited to literal eating by an organism.
- It is not evidence that self-replicating nanomachines exist or are imminent.
- It is not synonymous with a severe but recoverable local ecocide.
- Closest near-miss. Ecocide overlaps as severe ecosystem destruction, but global ecophagy emphasizes planet-scale consumptive propagation and terminal conversion.
Scope of Application¶
- Catastrophic-risk analysis. Runaway and systemic ecological scenarios are compared.
- Nanotechnology ethics. The original grey-goo case motivates containment questions.
- Environmental humanities. The term frames cumulative human transformation as consumption.
- Ecological resilience. Loss of repair capacity supplies a threshold beyond ordinary disturbance.
Clarity¶
Name the driver, substrate, propagation law, spatial coupling, timescale, limiting resources, containment assumptions, and ecological recovery threshold. Separate the original molecular-replicator scenario from metaphorical or cumulative uses, and avoid operational descriptions of harmful construction.
Manages Complexity¶
The term compresses heterogeneous routes to one endpoint and makes planetary coupling visible. That rhetorical power can erase feasibility differences. Serious analysis must restore resource constraints, feedbacks, diversity, refugia, intervention, and uncertainty.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Specify the ecological substrate and what counts as its consumption or conversion.
- Identify the driver and how it reproduces, persists, or accumulates.
- Estimate spread relative to ecological replenishment and recovery.
- Model limiting resources, negative feedback, geographic barriers, and intervention.
- Locate thresholds where local loss becomes globally coupled.
- Assess whether biospheric repair capacity is transiently impaired or persistently collapsed.
- State uncertainty without treating the terminal label as a probability estimate.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The framework transfers among existential ecological scenarios only at the level of driver–propagation–substrate–recovery relations. It stops before transferring numerical rates or feasibility from nanoreplicators to war or land-use change. The cargo is global consumptive collapse; each mechanism needs independent evidence.
Examples¶
Applied / In Practice¶
Autonomous replicators use biomass as feedstock and expand faster than ecological or human containment.
Mapped back: propagation → Replication scales the driver.; conversion → Biomass becomes replicator mass.; endpoint → Ecosystem repair is overtaken..
Applied / In Practice¶
A cumulative land-use and monoculture trajectory erodes diversity and redundancy until linked ecosystems cannot recover from disturbance.
Mapped back: persistence → Many ordinary actions compound rather than one machine running away..
Applied / In Practice¶
A large regional spill causes acute mortality but is contained and the ecosystem later recovers.
Mapped back: boundary → Severity alone does not supply global, irreversible consumption..
Structural Tensions¶
T1 — Warning Abstraction versus Mechanistic Credibility. A vivid terminal label can draw attention while hiding whether propagation, resources, and containment actually support the scenario.
Diagnostic: Model the driver, rate, limiting feedbacks, and recovery threshold explicitly.
T2 — Catastrophic Event versus Cumulative Trajectory. The same term covers rapid replicator takeover and slow human transformation with different causal structures.
Diagnostic: State timescale and mechanism rather than transferring probabilities between scenario classes.
Structural–Framed Character¶
Global reach and loss of recovery are structural; which outcomes count as lifeless or unacceptable is ethically framed. Scenario coherence does not establish technological feasibility or likelihood.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
The skeleton is runaway consumption of a regenerative substrate until regeneration fails. Ecology supplies ecosystems, biomass, diversity, resilience, and planetary coupling. Catastrophic-risk discourse supplies the global endpoint and containment question.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Global Ecophagy sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (38th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
