Global workspace theory¶
A cognitive architecture in which selected information becomes conscious by being globally broadcast to many specialized unconscious processes.
Core Idea¶
GWT models numerous parallel processors competing for access to a limited workspace; winning content is stabilized by attention and distributed widely for report, memory, planning, and flexible control. Competition creates a serial bottleneck, while broadcast recruits otherwise separate modules into a coordinated episode, explaining contrasts between local unconscious processing and globally available conscious content. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
