Go-to-Market Wedge

Enter a broad, defended market through a narrow point where you are sharply superior and incumbents are indifferent, win decisively to accumulate compounding assets, then unfold from that foothold into the adjacent segments it has made addressable.

Core Idea

A focused product, segment, or channel is deliberately chosen as the narrow point of entry into a broader, resistant market, on the bet that winning decisively in the narrow space opens the wider opportunity a frontal attack could not. The three-part sequence: pick a narrow space where the offering is sharply superior and a small team can dominate; win there to accumulate compounding assets (references, integrations, credibility); then unfold into adjacencies. The leverage comes from incumbent dismissal — the space must look unimportant so defenders decline to react.

Scope of Application

Lives within startup go-to-market strategy — every axis along which an entry can be narrowed into a leverageable foothold.

  • Wedge product / feature — one often-free feature clears the activation gap (Calendly scheduling, Loom recording, Figma's free file).
  • Wedge customer / segment — a narrow ICP where the product is overwhelmingly better (Stripe's developers, Tesla's early adopters).
  • Wedge channel — a channel that compounds in a niche before generalising (PayPal on eBay, Dropbox in dorms).
  • Wedge use case — a no-brainer application deep enough to platform out (Salesforce lead-tracking, Airtable trackers).

Clarity

The frame forces a sharper interrogation than "what is our launch strategy." It recasts narrowness as the source of leverage and converges three questions on one entry choice: where are we sharply superior, what is the expansion vector, and what makes the space credible to incumbents as unimportant? That third question separates a wedge from generic entry. It also names two failure modes: a win that cannot extend is a trap, and apparent narrowness that attacks a defended segment forfeits the dismissal advantage.

Manages Complexity

Launch planning otherwise fans out into separate decisions — ideal customer, product scope, pricing, motion, second and third acts. The wedge collapses them into one entry choice scored on three scalars: sharpness of superiority, incumbent indifference, and strength of the expansion vector. The qualitative verdict reads directly off them — high on all three generates force; weak incumbent-indifference invites the crushing reaction; a weak expansion vector is a trap.

Abstract Reasoning

It licenses diagnostic inference (read incumbent response and trap-status off the foothold's properties; distinguish thinness that earns indifference from thinness that merely limits scope), interventionist tuning (narrowing and broadening trade superiority against expansion reach, with a sweet spot rather than a monotone direction), boundary-drawing (which entries are wedges at all, and whether incumbent-dismissal is the operative mechanism), and order-of-events prediction (the second and third acts must be designed in at entry).

Knowledge Transfer

Within startup GTM the wedge transfers as mechanism across every narrowing axis — only the axis swaps — so a wedge analysis of one company informs another's choice. Its portable structure lives one level up: the wedge is the business-strategy variant of beachhead_market and a specialization of leverage_point. Distant substrates (ecology's propagule pressure, military schwerpunkt, change-management footholds) carry that parent shape with their own conversion mechanism, while the incumbent-dismissal machinery stays home. The political "wedge issue" is a same-word, different-mechanism analogy.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Go-to-Market Wedge sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (26th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
