Gold Plating¶
Diagnose a delivery overrun as producer-side unilateral scope expansion — quality or features added beyond the authorized envelope without the principal's sanction — whose real cost lives not in the polish but in the unbudgeted second-order burden it drags into downstream processes.
Core Idea¶
Gold plating is the delivery anti-pattern in which the producing team unilaterally adds quality, features, or scope beyond the agreed requirements — motivated by craft pride or anticipated client wants — without principal authorization, imposing cost, schedule slip, and maintenance burden not allocated to the addition. The structural mark is producer-unilateral scope expansion. The pathology lies in the second-order consequences: the enhancement enters downstream processes scoped to the smaller deliverable, which now own something unbudgeted.
Scope of Application¶
Gold plating lives wherever an agent executes a scoped commitment for a principal and can exceed the contract from its own side.
- Software delivery — an engineer adds a feature beyond sprint scope; QA, ops, docs inherit it.
- Construction — a contractor over-specifies materials beyond contract, then bills change orders.
- Public-policy implementation — an agency adds eligibility checks not in the legislation.
- Research-program execution — a PI adds a side experiment consuming the funded aims' budget.
- Manufacturing — a part held to a tolerance tighter than its function needs, raising rework with no gain.
Clarity¶
Naming gold plating isolates a specific failure from a fog of near-synonyms (scope creep, perfectionism, feature bloat) by its precise mark: producer-side unilateral addition without authorization. That single criterion sorts the deliverable into agreed versus producer-added items, which demand different cures, and relocates the cost from the polish to the second-order downstream burden.
Manages Complexity¶
A wide field of budget-failure explanations compresses to one binary sort applied item by item — was this agreed or producer-added? The lead then tracks a few quantities per addition, above all the second-order burden, from which the damage (not the immediate quality) predicts the cost, feeding a two-branch remedy: renegotiate agreed growth, discipline producer-added scope.
