Gonzo journalism¶
A participatory first-person journalistic style in which the reporter becomes a protagonist and openly combines experience, social critique and self-satire.
Core Idea¶
Gonzo journalism rejects a detached narrator but still makes a truth claim about situated experience, using an overtly subjective voice, scene participation and literary exaggeration under an identifiable authorial perspective. The reporter enters the event, records perceptions and interactions, selects and stylizes them through a first-person persona and uses the resulting narrative to critique both subject and observer. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Gonzo journalism belongs to journalism and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed journalism carrier, including its objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundary cases, and comparison targets, then evaluate the reporter and event, degree of participation, first-person narrative stance, evidential basis, literary alteration, social critique, self-reflexivity and boundary between reported experience and invention are explicit. Clarity¶
