GPS Drawing¶
An artistic method in which movement through geographic space is recorded as a GPS track and visualized as a line whose mapped shape forms an intended image, text, or pattern.
Core Idea¶
GPS drawing converts traveled geography into a drawn line. The artist's body or vehicle becomes the stylus, landscape becomes the surface, and satellite-derived coordinates become the trace.
The final image is simultaneously route, measurement, and representation. Planning, safety, access, signal error, projection, editing, and visualization all influence what counts as the performed line.
Scope of Application¶
- Participatory and locative art. Uses embodied movement and place as media.
- Running and cycling art. Creates human-scale route figures.
- Vehicle and ocean-scale work. Extends drawings across larger geographies.
- Digital exhibition. Renders tracks, maps, animation, and process documentation.
Clarity¶
State intent, route planning, traveler and mode, date, device, sampling, coordinate reference, signal gaps, safety and permissions, raw file retention, edits, interpolation, projection, base map, styling, and whether the image was planned or recognized afterward. Inclusion test: Require a location track materially derived from movement in geographic space and presented so its path functions as the drawing. Exclusion test: Exclude route planning never traveled, conventional digital line art drawn on a map, cartographic traces used only for navigation or fitness, and synthetic GPX coordinates presented as recorded travel without disclosure. Nearest boundary: Virtual GPS drawing can construct coordinate tracks without physical traversal; it is a neighboring digital practice and should be labeled distinctly from route-performed GPS art. Exit condition: The claim changes when editing adds, deletes, relocates, or connects substantial segments beyond recorded motion, unless those transformations are disclosed as part of the artwork. Common misclassifications: Any GPS track is not automatically an artwork. A route planned but never traveled is not the same practice. Synthetic coordinates should not be presented as measured movement. The displayed line is affected by projection and editing. Nearest named distinctions: Route map: Can serve navigation without artistic image intent. Fitness trace: Documents exercise but is not necessarily art. Virtual GPS drawing: Constructs coordinates without physical traversal. Land art: Alters or arranges landscape material rather than necessarily recording a route.
Manages Complexity¶
A seemingly simple polyline entangles satellite measurement, embodied travel, infrastructure, landscape, law, risk, file processing, map projection, and artistic interpretation. Provenance determines whether the line documents performance or only resembles it.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Define the intended image and identify a safe lawful geographic route.
- Record movement with documented sampling and device conditions.
- Preserve raw coordinates and distinguish gaps from later edits.
- Choose projection and visualization that do not silently distort the claim.
- Present route, image, process, and uncertainty as parts of the work.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Movement-as-mark and track visualization transfer across travel modes, but geography, access, safety, signal quality, and legal constraints remain local. Synthetic geodata is a related medium, not automatically the same performed method.

GPS Drawing is a strict kind of Representation: An artistic method in which movement through geographic space is recorded as a GPS track and visualized as a line whose mapped shape forms an intended image, text, or pattern.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
GPS Drawing sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (37th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
