Gross national product¶
The former production-framed name for gross national income: the gross primary income attributable to a country's residents, equal to GDP plus residents' factor income from abroad minus factor income paid to nonresidents.
Core Idea¶
Gross national product (GNP) is the older name for the aggregate now standardized as gross national income (GNI). It measures gross primary income attributable to residents, regardless of whether the production generating that income occurs at home or abroad.
The accounting bridge is GNP/GNI = GDP + factor income residents receive from nonresidents − factor income residents pay to nonresidents. GDP is territory-based value added; GNP/GNI is resident-based income. The measure is gross because depreciation has not been deducted, and subtracting consumption of fixed capital produces net national income.
Structural Signature¶
Sig role-phrases:
- resident institutional units. Defines whose income is attributed to the nation. Constitutive boundary. If altered: Domestic location alone defines GDP, not GNP/GNI.
- domestic product base. Provides GDP as the starting aggregate. Accounting bridge. If altered: Resident income can also be assembled directly, but the identity relation must hold.
- inbound factor income. Adds labor and property income earned abroad by residents. Constitutive cross-border adjustment. If altered: Exports of goods are already treated through GDP accounts, not added here as factor income.
- outbound factor income. Subtracts domestic factor income accruing to nonresidents. Constitutive cross-border adjustment. If altered: Ignoring it overstates resident income.
- gross valuation frame. Keeps consumption of fixed capital before depreciation. Necessary gross/net boundary. If altered: Subtracting depreciation yields NNI rather than GNP/GNI.
What It Is Not¶
- GDP. Does the total follow territory or residents?
- Net national income. Has depreciation been subtracted?
- National wealth. Is a stock being confused with period income?
- Modified GNI. Is a country-specific adjustment being substituted for the standard aggregate?
Scope of Application¶
Use GNP when discussing the historical name or resident-income aggregate, and identify the accounting vintage and residence conventions.
- National accounts. Reconciles GDP and resident income.
- Historical statistics. Interprets series labeled GNP.
- Cross-border income. Tracks labor and property income flows.
- International comparison. Uses GNI/GNP levels or per-capita forms.
- Policy contributions. Provides a base for some international assessments.
Clarity¶
Nationality in ordinary language is not the test; statistical residence is. A foreign-owned domestic factory contributes to GDP, while its income remitted to nonresidents is removed in the GNP/GNI bridge.
Manages Complexity¶
The aggregate compresses production, ownership, and cross-border distribution into one resident-income total. Naming conventions, depreciation, price bases, exchange rates, and per-capita transformations must remain separate.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Fix the accounting period and resident-unit definition.
- Obtain GDP under the same valuation conventions.
- Add resident factor income received from abroad.
- Subtract factor income paid to nonresidents.
- Keep gross/net and total/per-capita transformations explicit.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Territory-versus-membership accounting transfers to organizations and regions, but SNA residence, factor income, and depreciation rules delimit GNP. The nearest stopping boundary is explicit: GDP is closest: it measures production inside the economic territory, whereas GNP/GNI follows resident recipients across borders. The inclusion test remains: A measure is GNP in the modern-equivalent sense when it totals gross primary income of residents and reconciles to GDP through net factor income from abroad. The structure no longer applies when the case exits when the residence principle is replaced by territory, depreciation is deducted, or nonfactor transfers are mixed into the adjustment.
Examples¶
Canonical¶
If residents earn 8 abroad while nonresidents earn 5 domestically and GDP is 100 under matched conventions, GNP/GNI is 103 before depreciation.
Mapped back: resident institutional units → defined national residents; domestic product base → GDP 100; inbound factor income → 8; outbound factor income → 5; gross valuation frame → depreciation not deducted.
Applied / In Practice¶
Ireland's modified GNI is designed to reduce distortions in the ordinary aggregates; it is related but not simply another name for standard GNP/GNI.
Mapped back: resident institutional units → Irish accounting frame; domestic product base → distorted GDP context; inbound factor income → adjusted under special measure; outbound factor income → adjusted under special measure; gross valuation frame → GNI-star methodology.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: territorial production vs. resident income. Global ownership separates where output occurs from who receives factor income. Diagnostic: Is the question about place or recipient?
T2: comparability vs. economic restructuring. Stable formulas can yield misleading signals when multinational structures shift sharply. Diagnostic: Do supplementary aggregates expose the distortion?
Structural–Framed Character¶
Description turns on resident institutional units, domestic product base, inbound factor income, outbound factor income, gross valuation frame. Skeletal core. A territorial total is adjusted by cross-boundary flows to follow a defined membership set. Domain-bound accent. GDP, residents, factor income, depreciation, and national accounts define GNP/GNI. Transfer remains bounded because Why not prime. Boundary-adjusted accounting is portable; this is a macroeconomic aggregate. The negative boundary is concrete: Any GDP, national wealth, government revenue, export total, household income, GNI per capita, NNI, or modified GNI measure is not gross national product itself. GNP is measurement-structural: the accounting identity is formal, while residence, valuation, and interpretation depend on statistical conventions. Its character: gross national income assigned by residence rather than production territory.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
Skeletal core. A territorial total is adjusted by cross-boundary flows to follow a defined membership set.
Domain-bound accent. GDP, residents, factor income, depreciation, and national accounts define GNP/GNI.
Why not prime. Boundary-adjusted accounting is portable; this is a macroeconomic aggregate.
Instantiates / Related Primes¶
- Aggregation. Many income flows enter one total.
- Boundary. Residence replaces production territory.
- No strict parent is asserted.
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Gross national product sits in a moderately populated region (42nd percentile for distinctiveness): it has near-neighbors but no dense thicket of look-alikes.

Not to Be Confused With¶
- GDP. Tell: Does the total follow territory or residents?
- Net national income. Tell: Has depreciation been subtracted?
- National wealth. Tell: Is a stock being confused with period income?
- Modified GNI. Tell: Is a country-specific adjustment being substituted for the standard aggregate?
