Hard inheritance¶
The historical heredity model in which inherited variation passes through germ-line material and acquired somatic changes are not transmitted to offspring.
Core Idea¶
Hard inheritance is the view that changes acquired during an organism's lifetime do not alter the hereditary material passed to descendants. A protected germ-line lineage transmits hereditary factors while most somatic modifications end with the individual, separating development from inheritance. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of history of biology. It is Weismannian separation of hereditary transmission from lifetime bodily modification.
