Hawk–Dove Game¶
Model an anti-coordination contest with mutually destructive escalation as a 2x2 game whose entire equilibrium is fixed by the cost-to-prize ratio V/C — predicting a structural, tunable rate of costly conflict among fully rational players who would all prefer peace.
Core Idea¶
The Hawk–Dove game (Maynard Smith and Price, 1973) is a symmetric two-player game in which each contests a prize of value V by playing Hawk (escalate and fight, at cost C if both escalate) or Dove (display and concede, splitting with another Dove). The equilibrium is controlled by V/C: when V > C, Hawk dominates and the ESS is all-Hawk; when V < C, neither pure strategy is stable and the ESS is mixed, escalating with probability V/C. Its structural import is a positive equilibrium rate of costly conflict even among rational players who prefer peace.

Its sharper contribution is to make a counterintuitive fact legible and quantitative — a positive equilibrium rate of costly conflict is structural, not pathological — and to locate the whole equilibrium in V/C, turning "how to reduce conflict" into concrete levers.

Without the model, every escalation-prone contest looks like its own thick situation modeled from tempers and histories. The game collapses that sprawl to two scalars and their ratio: once a contest is recognized as anti-coordination with destructive escalation, everything is fixed by V, C, and V/C. The ratio imposes a two-branch regime (all-Hawk above V=C, mixed below), so the analyst locates a contest against one threshold, computes the escalation rate, and selects from a short menu of structural levers.
