Hemizygosity Exposure¶
A recessive allele or incompatibility is phenotypically exposed when its locus is present in only one copy, because no homologous allele exists to mask its effect.
Core Idea¶
Hemizygosity exposure occurs when a locus is represented by only one allele in an organism or cell, so a recessive variant or incompatibility cannot be masked by a homologous counterpart and can therefore be phenotypically expressed. The locus must normally admit a paired comparison, only one functional copy must be present, the allele's effect must otherwise be maskable, and expression must follow from the absence of a homolog rather than from dominance. Sex-linked loci, deletions, and copy-number loss can create the condition.
Scope of Application¶
The “unpaired alternative becomes visible” skeleton can be analogized elsewhere, but allele, locus, homolog, masking, and phenotype are causally indispensable. The abstraction is genetic.
Clarity¶
Homozygosity has two copies of the same allele. Haploinsufficiency is harm from insufficient dosage of one functional copy, not exposure of a recessive alternative. Loss of heterozygosity is a transition that can produce hemizygous or homozygous expression but is not the state itself.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction turns a scattered family of cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.
