Homoeomeria (philosophy)¶
Reconstruct the ancient Anaxagorean doctrine of like-parted stuffs in which familiar materials are characterized by constituent portions of the same qualitative kind, while separating later doxography from Anaxagoras's surviving words.
Core Idea¶
Homoeomeria is the later ancient label for the Anaxagorean account on which stuffs such as flesh, bone, and gold are like-parted: a portion of the stuff answers to the same qualitative kind as the larger quantity, within a cosmology in which ingredients are mixed and appearance follows predominance.[1] Instead of deriving sensible qualities from wholly unlike atoms, the reconstructed view treats differentiated stuffs as present in mixtures and explains an object's manifest kind through the ingredients that predominate after cosmic separation.
Its autonomous residual is the historically specific like-parted-stuff and mixture doctrine attributed to Anaxagoras through ancient doxography, not any inference that a whole's accidental property belongs to every microscopic part. The identity fails when Anaxagoras is made to use Aristotle's later word as his own, seeds are treated as indivisible modern atoms, every property of an aggregate is projected to each part, the mixture doctrine is omitted, or Lucretius's polemical reconstruction is read as neutral transcription.
