Homophily¶
The tendency for social ties to occur more often between people or entities that are similar on relevant attributes.
Core Idea¶
Baseline homophily from opportunity structure differs from inbreeding homophily beyond availability, and selection and influence can produce the same observed similarity. Similarity changes encounter rates, trust, communication cost or tie utility, increasing within-category connection relative to an appropriate mixing baseline. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of social networks. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the network and population, node attributes and similarity metric, tie type and direction, opportunity baseline, observed mixing, selection versus influence timing, confounders and uncertainty are explicit.
Scope of Application¶
Homophily belongs to social networks and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed social networks carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, and comparison cases, then evaluate the network and population, node attributes and similarity metric, tie type and direction, opportunity baseline, observed mixing, selection versus influence timing, confounders and uncertainty are explicit.
