Horizon chart¶
A compact quantitative graphic that folds value bands onto a shared baseline and uses color intensity and sign to preserve magnitude patterns in little vertical space.
Core Idea¶
A horizon chart transforms an area chart by choosing a baseline, separating or shifting signed values, dividing magnitude into equal bands and overlaying those bands so multiple series can be compared compactly. Values are normalized relative to an origin, negative values are reflected or offset, each magnitude interval becomes a colored layer and the layers are folded into the same vertical strip. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
